  Advocacy
Surplus Carcasses, Nutrient Enhancement, & Volunteers

WDFW recently concluded a stakeholder process regarding how surplus salmon are “disposed” from WDFW operated hatcheries. A number of CCA members were involved in this process which included three stakeholder meetings over a 2-month period. During this process CCA became concerned that nutrient enhancement was not a priority and as a result wrote a letter to WDFW expressing our concerns. Scientific data overwhelmingly supports the ecosystem benefits that are provided by salmon carcasses. On November 1 WDFW submitted a report to the Washington state legislators with their proposed recommendations. This document can be accessed by clicking here. A copy of CCA’s letter to WDFW is included as Appendix F on page 83 of this document.

One key piece of information that was shared during this process is that across the state there is a lack of volunteers needed to remove these carcasses from hatcheries and place them back into their respective watersheds. WDFW has committed to returning more carcasses to our watersheds given adequate volunteer manpower. CCA plans to work in conjunction with WDFW to identify these areas where volunteer support is lacking and to the extent possible work to mobilize CCA members, and other volunteer groups, to perform this very important function.

If you are actively involved in a nutrient enhancement program in your area, or you would like to be, please contact Nello Picinich at nello.picinich@ccapnw.org.

  Washougal River Nutrient Enhancement Projects

The Lower Columbia Fish Enhancement Group manager, Peter Barber, reports:

This year’s nutrient enhancement program on the Washougal River was extremely successful and nearly 100% driven by volunteer support.  I personally appreciate CCA’s willingness to gather volunteers on short notice to help assist hatchery staff to sort, spawn, and surplus nearly 8,000 Fall Chinook returning to the Washougal River.  During a single day in October, CCA, WSU Watershed Stewards, AmeriCorp, and local volunteers helped surplus over 2,600 Chinook salmon for LCFEG’s Washougal River nutrient enhancement program.  Impressive!

In total, during 9 LCFEG Nutrient Enhancement outreach events, volunteers donated 614 hrs and dispersed approx. 40 tons of surplus hatchery Fall Chinook carcasses into the headwaters of Washougal River.  I give special thanks to a few ‘All-Star’ CCA members that volunteered their time during multiple nutrient enhancement events, including; Steve Koch, Lyle Cabe, Ron DeShazr, Richard Wenger, and Steven Guy.  Great work CCA!

Finally, for those who are interested - LCFEG will be hosting additional Nutrient Enhancement events to help spawn/surplus hatchery coho salmon during December 14, 21, and 28 at Washougal Hatchery (15632 Washougal River Road, Washougal, WA 98671).  Please bring raingear, boots and/or waders.  Volunteers typically arrive at the hatchery around 9am.

If you have any questions, or would like more details please contact:

  River Log Drive

Few Of Us Have Witnessed This In Our Rivers

Decades ago rivers were used to wash huge amounts of timber and pulp logs downstream to lumber and pulp mills.  Ed Wickersham, Government Relations Committee, came across two videos that show how “splash dams” were used in this log drive process.

The first video (9 minutes) includes discussion of river damage, some of it still existing, sustained from these log drives.  The second video, with some additional information, is 2 1/2 minutes long.
