Extreme weather, rising seas and damaged ecosystems could threaten the safety and livelihoods of billions of people. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), an annual average of 21.5 million people have been forcibly displaced by weather-related events – such as floods, storms, wildfires and extreme temperatures – since 2008. These numbers are expected to surge in coming decades with forecasts from international think tank IEP predicting that 1.2 billion people could be displaced globally by 2050 due to climate change and natural disasters.
This bill will help establish a concrete plan for an immigration pathway to admit climate-displaced persons into the United States. These are individuals who need durable resettlement because of an environmental change that adversely affects their living conditions, and whose government cannot or will not provide a resettlement solution. This change can help make an immeasurable difference on countless lives. Please support this bill!
