President Biden has the power to recognize the war in the Ukraine means we need to accelerate our actions to get off fossil fuels for good. By declaring a national climate emergency and super-charging our move to clean, renewable energy, he can also make good on campaign promises that have thus far been stymied in Congress. And he can do it in a way that begins to address the disproportionate impacts on on some of our disadvantaged communities not unlike those highlighted in the ongoing Defund Formosa Plastics campaign and others. Congress can support him in this effort showing their commitment to address the Climate Crisis, too.
This action asks Congress to not only support the President but also to pass their own bills, S. 938 and H.R. 794, each still languishing in committee in their respective houses, that would declare a Climate Emergency and provide a broader foundation for immediate changes.
We need them to know we are paying attention and intend to use our votes wisely in each of the 4 remaining elections in the time science tells us we have left to make significant progress on climate change.
