Most everyone knows that pollution is threatening the longevity of our world, via the negative impacts that are associated with it. There are many causes of pollution; however, the largest polluting industry is the energy sector. Specifically, the energy sector produces over15.83 billion tons of GHG each year. This pollution directly leads to “air pollution, climate change, water pollution, thermal pollution, and solid waste disposal”. According to Alliance to Save Energy, the U.S. overspends on energy every year because “many older federal buildings are very energy inefficient and do not take advantage of new technologies that can shift, shape and integrate energy needs with innovative solutions”. This needs to change. Not only is it bad for the environment but the government is also wasting taxpayers money.

To counter the damaging effects from traditional energy production, there has been a shift to renewable energy sources. This includes things like solar power, wind power, hydro power and geothermal power. To aid in the transition, the recent administration has passed legislation to encourage the use of renewables in public markets. However, it is time for the government to look internally when it comes to encouraging sustainable energy consumption. Introducing this bill will do exactly that. There is no better way than encouraging change than by leading by example.
