The US desperately needs good tools for monitoring the impacts of land use practices, including conservation activities, on greenhouse gas emissions and soil carbon sequestration. These tools will allow the USDA and farmers to know which practices among many, such as no till, cover crops, and agroforestry, actually reduce carbon emissions, sequester carbon, and store carbon over the long term.
