I urge you to support the Western Wildfire Support Act of 2023 (S. 1764) to improve current wildfire prevention programs. By improving wildfire management we can protect human life, natural resources like forests, and infrastructure in our communities.
Wildfires are a huge threat, with about 7.6 million acres of forests burned in 2022 alone. These have been worsening, with 10 of the largest California wildfires occurring in the last 20 years—five of which occurred in 2020 alone and will continue to increase in strength and frequency, according to a recent paper from the NOAA.
This bill will provide improved options for wildfire mitigation, including programs to train citizens to assist during wildfires, creating wildfire-related invasive species advisory boards, and recovery funding for communities affected by the wildfires.
By supporting this bill, you will be directly assisting in wildfire damage, ultimately preserving our nation's forests, infrastructure, and communities.
