Methane is nearly 85 times as potent as CO2 over 10 years. Because of this, reducing methane emissions is one of the highest-impact climate solutions - one that will deliver results and relief far faster than if we focus solely on CO2.
Fortunately, the solutions are available and cost-effective. With effective monitoring and enforcement, methane leaks from gas lines, landfills, sewage, and abandoned oil wells can be addressed.
What we need is the political will and regulatory oversight to hold industry accountable for making these much-needed reductions.
