The GBF has targeted conserving 30% of land by 2030, a goal President Biden has adopted and the US participated in recently with China. Yet despite decades of land protections in the US, we have only succeeded in protecting 12% of the land here to date. Much more must be done and now, permanently protecting more land not only so that many species will face reduced risk of extinction or range-wide collapse as climate change continues, but also to ensure that should climate deniers return to power before the end of the decade, we can still meet the goals.
This issue demands action and should also be clearly identified as a key consideration in the 2024 elections!
