100 billion plastic beverage containers were sold last year in the United States. That’s more than 300 bottles per citizen. A few of them will be converted into park benches; none of them will be made into new plastic bottles, and 95% of all plastics won’t be recycled at all.

That's why this Earth Day, we need our leaders to commit to two critical goals:

- Reducing overall plastic production by 60% by 2040

- Eliminating all single-use plastic production by 2030

- Implementing a "polluter pays" system to holding plastic producers liable for the environmental and health impacts of their products

- Ending the export of plastic waste overseas

- Banning the incineration of plastic waste
