Climate Action Now

Tell your members of Congress to call "natural gas" by its true name: methane
Methane is referred to as "natural gas" many times in laws and regulations. While it sounds safe, this deceptive brand name is designed to lull our civilization into a false sense of security.

Methane is a climate culprit 84 times more powerful at causing our era's heating crisis than carbon dioxide! It's time to use words in a clear straightforward way and replace every instance where the phrase "natural gas" appears with the scientifically accurate term, "methane."

Humankind will simply not slow global heating if we don't win on methane emission reductions!

This bill would be an important first step we can take to draw attention to the methane problem, shift public thinking, and get people fired up to fight methane leaks. That's because every single "natural gas" system leaks to some extent, whether it's a pipeline, pumping station, well-head, storage tank, or household appliance.

These leaks can be especially bad at giant dairy and cattle feeding operations, landfills, and municipal wastewater plants.

This is a powerful bill idea that can be copied in legislatures across the country, so let's make it happen! This might take multiple tries, but if we can reframe America's thinking around the second-biggest greenhouse gas, it will be worth it.
