While the results of this research still need to be confirmed, a new study is estimating that between 4% and 14% of staple crops are being lost due to the impact of microplastics on plant photosynthesis. These particles harm plants by damaging soils, blocking sunlight and water/nutrient channels, and releasing toxins. The annual impacts of this on crop yield could be similar to those of the climate crisis, raising concerns about global food security.
