Climate Action Now

Tell Congress to pass the FREEDOM Act and unleash clean energy!

Hundreds of clean energy projects are being blocked by the White House as the rest of the world builds clean electricity abundance.

Tell Congress to pass the FREEDOM Act and unleash clean energy!

Constant insane political attacks on clean energy have created an entirely self-inflicted U.S. electricity crisis as gigawatts of almost-ready-to-go clean power are blocked by the executive branch, adding a new level of self-sabotage to a U.S. energy situation that already had vast amounts of clean energy held up by interconnection queues and permitting delays. This White House is trying to prop up a dying fossil fuel industry with late-Soviet levels of cronyism and corruption.

Now, a new desperately-needed bipartisan permitting reform bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. Named the FREEDOM Act, it includes key provisions from the recent SPEED Act and GEO Act bills (neither of which passed) that would make it much easier to build energy projects in America without years of bad-faith-litigation-vulnerable red tape, plus extremely badly needed new legal protections to prevent the President abusing executive powers to cancel or pause energy projects. If a bill like this was passed in 2024, it would’ve prevented the absurd stop-work orders against nearly-complete offshore wind farms, for example.

“Streamlining permitting processes and providing certainty for new and existing projects will give a much-needed boost to American energy production and lower energy costs at a time when working families need it most.”

— Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-MI-08)

The hope is that Republicans might vote for this in the hope of safeguarding their donors’ hypothetical new fossil fuel projects from a future Democratic president, while climate hawks should definitely vote for this because if America finally builds a fair permitting playing field to unleash the massive clean energy backlog we have, it seems very probable that won’t even be any economically viable new fossil fuel projects in America by 2029.

The EIA reports that clean energy provided over 90% of new-build capacity in America in 2025 despite an onslaught of White House attacks and overwhelming snarls of red tape. Now that the economics are on the side of clean air, permitting reform overwhelmingly benefits the clean energy revolution and must be an absolute top priority for climate action. Imagine what we could build if we really unleashed solar, wind, and battery build-outs! America could be seeing an unprecedented building boom in abundant clean electricity right now, bringing lower electricity bills for families — like what’s already happening in China, Australia, Chile, and the European Union. Let’s make it happen.
