The AMOC helps distribute heat and regulate weather by moving warm water north and cold water south. Unfortunately, with air temperatures increasing in the Arctic, this circulation is slowing down—and according to recent research, a bigger slowdown and potential collapse are much more likely than initially thought. This would be the worst possible outcome, resulting in greater weather extremes, an increase in sea level rise, and the shifting of the tropical rainfall belt, where a massive amount of food is grown. That's why supporting and expanding research is so important.
