Due to their buoyant designs, slower speeds, minimal propulsion needs, and potential for integrating solar panels and hybrid electric systems, modern airships release 75-90% less carbon pollution than conventional airplanes.
The AIRSHIP Act authorizes NASA to scale up research around these airships and explore how they can improve safety and resiliency while mitigating noise and environmental impacts. It also allows the agency to launch a competitive grant program, which would support researchers in developing new airship technologies.
