Congress is rushing forward with a budget plan that threatens Medicaid’s future.
On May 22, the House of Representatives passed legislation containing drastic Medicaid cuts that would put older adults, people with disabilities, and low-income families at risk. These policies would harm everyone covered by Medicaid—including more than 12 million people who rely on both Medicaid and Medicare for their health, well-being, and financial security. A recent report found that in 2019, Medicaid provided the COPD community approximately $3 billion of needed health care coverage. Changes to Medicaid would terminate healthcare for millions. The House-passed bill also contains changes that will make it harder and more expensive to purchase insurance from the health insurance exchanges, a double whammy for those who might lose Medicaid coverage.
Medicaid is essential health coverage.
Nationwide, one in three individuals with Medicare and COPD also qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid can cover Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket costs, provide long-term care, and ensure access to critical services that Medicare alone does not cover. Slashing Medicaid funding would make it harder for many people with Medicare to afford care, stay in their homes and communities, and get the support they need.
The process now moves to the Senate. There is still time to act, and now is the time to make your voice heard.
Tell your Senators to protect Medicaid, Medicare, and everyone who relies on the programs.
