We are back with a quick request for you to amplify our work to protect neighborhood restaurants.
AB 1604 (Stefani) seeks to phase out the use of certain chemicals in receipt paper – specifically bisphenol A & S.
We don’t object to that, of course!
But we do object to provisions of AB 1604 that inappropriately attempt to hold restaurants and other retail businesses responsible for the actions of paper receipt providers.
AB 1604 actually proposes fines of up to $5,000 for the first instance, and up to $10,000 for all subsequent instances in which restaurants provide a proof of purchase containing intentionally added bisphenols, despite not being manufacturers of the products.
Restaurants and other retailers are the end-users of receipt paper and cannot be held responsible for the actions of producers.
The CRA is advocating for amendments to AB 1604 that would remove restaurants from any fine structure, so you don’t get stuck with the potential for a $10,000 fine over a receipt.
Restaurants have it hard enough – tell your Assembly Member that you are opposed to AB 1604 unless it is amended to remove end-users of receipt paper from the fine structure.
Thank you,
The CRA Government Affairs Team
