We are working hard to improve California’s legal climate, and we are excited about an important piece of legislation to tackle the rise in website-related litigation.
And we’d like your help!
Over the last few years, there has been a growing misuse of a 1967 law that was originally used for wiretapping. A handful of attorneys' groups have abused this law, filing over 1,100 lawsuits — extracting exorbitant settlements from restaurants and other businesses.
Plaintiff's claims are about supposed “criminal activity” for collecting information like IP addresses and advertising analytics, but the reality is that many plaintiffs never suffered any harm or injury, nor do they have any connection to the businesses targeted. This has impacted employers and non-profits of all sizes — and even governments.
SB 690 solves this problem by cutting off pathways for continued abuse and clarifying that online business activity is already regulated under a different law.
Please join us in supporting this sensible legal reform by contacting your Assemblymember and urging them to support SB 690 (Caballero) on July 1st in the Assembly Privacy Committee.
