Many individuals with SMA and other disabilities rely on the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program to meet their basic living needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. In many states, individuals enrolled in SSI are also automatically eligible for Medicaid and its caregiving services.
While SSI is vital, outdated program rules create major barriers to work, savings, and marriage for people with disabilities.
To remain eligible, individuals must stay within strict asset limits of just $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples. These asset limits have not been updated in nearly 40 years.
Bipartisan legislation (H.R. 2540; S. 1234) would raise these limits to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for couples, and index them to inflation going forward. In addition to promoting financial security, the legislation would also fix the marriage penalty that exists in SSI.
TAKE ACTION: Ask Congress to update the SSI asset limits this Congress to better support the financial independence and security of people with disabilities.
