DAA Institutional Supporter: The Delaware Contemporary
The Delaware Contemporary, located on the Riverfront Wilmington, positions itself at the intersection of art, design, and technology. Executive Director John Shipman explains that the name change from The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) reflects the organization's new mission and vision.
The Delaware Contemporary, Shipman notes, better shows the breadth of what can be explored. "We are more than the visual arts and our galleries. As an institution, we see many opportunities for creative expression not only in art, but also in design and technology. Being The Delaware Contemporary opens that up."
Shipman, formerly the Director at the University of Maryland's Art Gallery, explains that The Delaware Contemporary's programs and exhibitions will have stronger ties to technology and multiple forms of design (fashion, industrial, graphic, and more). This new intersection, he explains, allows The Delaware Contemporary to "open minds in thinking about what is creative."
Looking at 2016, Shipman notes The Delaware Contemporary is building partnerships with local innovators in technology and design. "We strive to help connect business leaders and universities to transform Wilmington into the epitome of innovation."
Additionally The Delaware Contemporary is looking to expand its footprint in Kent and Sussex counties. "The new mission of incorporating design and technology makes that happen as we can be more portable and mobile. As The Delaware Contemporary, we can now serve as a both resource and a vanguard."
Considering the importance of strong arts advocacy in Delaware, Shipman said, "It is vital to communicate the value of what the arts community is doing statewide. Support needs to be there to uphold the arts' contributions to Delaware's culture and economy."
