Currently, Medicaid in Pennsylvania provides coverage for GLP-1 weight-loss medications to treat obesity and prevent diabetes. However, state leaders are considering rolling back coverage, putting access to obesity treatment for many in jeopardy. We urge Governor Shapiro and state legislators to ensure access to comprehensive obesity treatment for Medicaid enrollees.
Action is needed now. Prior to expanded coverage, the American Diabetes Association® projected that 50% of Pennsylvanians would have obesity by 2030. Paring back coverage for obesity treatment would stifle progress that has been made and is still needed to help address obesity and risk for type 2 diabetes and other debilitating and costly health conditions.
