Ask Congress to Reauthorize Tax Credits That Make Health Coverage Affordable!
Individuals who do not receive health insurance coverage through their employer and do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare can purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplaces. Tax credits can help make ACA Marketplace coverage more affordable. These tax credits are based on each consumer’s estimated annual income, family size, and state of residence.

Several years ago, Congress provided additional subsidies to those who were already eligible for tax credits and expanded access to these enhanced tax credits - known as enhanced Advance Premium Tax Credits (eAPTCS) - to middle-income consumers to help further reduce the cost of buying health insurance through the Marketplace. These enhanced tax credits expired at the end of 2025.

Millions of hard-working Americans will see their health insurance premiums increase. On average, premiums will nearly double, and millions of people will have to choose between paying for essentials like rent, food, and utilities and continuing their health insurance coverage.

On December 17, 2025, four moderate Republican Representatives — Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Rob Bresnahan, Ryan Mackenzie, and Mike Lawler — joined House Democrats in signing a discharge petition for a bill for a three-year extension of the eAPTCs. A discharge petition is a legislative tool used in the House to bring a vote to the floor without going through the Committee process first. Discharge petitions require 218 votes to be successful, and the four moderate Republican signatures on the eAPTC discharge petition enabled it to reach the 218 threshold. However, even with 218 signatures, House rules required a waiting period before the discharge petition could be brought to the House floor for a vote.

Good news! On January 8, 2026, the House passed a 3-year extension of eAPTCs – 17 Republicans voted for it! Thank you to all the grassroots epilepsy advocates for your amazing outreach efforts!

Now, the Senate is expected to vote on these enhanced tax credits soon. Please send a message to your U.S. Senators TODAY asking them to support a three-year extension of the enhanced premium tax credits to keep health coverage affordable for the millions of Americans who depend on it, including people with epilepsy and their family members.
