Make Diwali a National Holiday: Support H. Res. 824 Recognizing Diwali
H. Res. 824 has been introduced in the US House of Representatives to formally recognize the religious and cultural significance of Diwali. Led by Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi alongside a broad bipartisan coalition of co-sponsors, this resolution acknowledges the deep importance of Diwali to millions of Americans, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, and expresses Congress's respect for the Indian American community and the rich religious diversity that strengthens our nation.

Federal recognition is an important affirmation of the growing Hindu American community and its contributions to the country. It signals that our traditions, values, and celebrations are respected at the highest levels of government and sets a positive precedent for additional state and local acknowledgments across the country.

If passed, H. Res. 824 would send a clear message that the traditions and celebrations of Hindu Americans are valued as a part of America’s diverse and pluralistic fabric. By recognizing Diwali at the federal level, this resolution would establish a precedent, encouraging states to pursue more practical accommodations, such as granting days off for both employees and students.

We encourage you to contact your Member of Congress and urge them to CO-SPONSOR and SUPPORT H. Res. 824!
