On March 1, Savitha Shan, a University of Texas student, was tragically killed in a shooting in downtown Austin. The loss of such a young life is a tragedy, and yet, as her family grieves, they have been met with hateful messages online rather than compassion. Moreover, a letter circulated by several state legislators has tied the Austin terrorist attack and Savitha’s tragic death to the H-1B visa program in ways that risk scapegoating the broader Indian American community instead of focusing on the act of terrorism itself.
Additionally, across Texas, city council meetings are being hijacked by outside groups purporting H-1B visa concerns, but instead, are using these forums to spread hostility toward Indian Americans.
Even Hindu temples, our sacred spaces, have faced harassment and threats, leaving many feeling unsafe in the very places where they come to find peace. This is not a political issue. It is a matter of basic human dignity.
The Hindu and Indian American community has long been an integral part of Texas, contributing to the state’s economy, schools, civic life, and culture. No community should have to face this kind of hostility, and it is important for leaders to speak out clearly against hate.
We need YOU to contact your Texas State Legislators today and urge them to publicly condemn anti-Hindu hate and anti-Indian hate.
Be sure to check out HAF’s City Council Toolkit for additional guidance and resources.
