PLEASE: Urge Congress to Strengthen and Increase Funding for Head Start
The recent federal government shutdown underscored both Head Start's critical role and the importance of increased and stable funding. It also exposed how much Head Start depends on a deeply committed, yet underpaid and overextended, workforce.

The good news: the shutdown is over. The not-so-good news: Congress and the President have not yet agreed to funding for the entirety of fiscal year 2026 (FY26). As Congress resumes its work on full-year FY26 funding, every Head Start champion must urge their members of Congress to provide increased funding that keeps pace with rising costs and sustains this program, which delivers comprehensive early learning, nutrition, health and developmental screenings, and family support services that help children thrive and families build stability.

The House Labor/HHS appropriations bill for FY26 proposes level funding for Head Start for the third consecutive year. That’s effectively a cut when inflation is considered and could force classroom closures and a reduction in services. The Senate version of the bill proposes an $85 million increase for Head Start in FY26. That’s an improvement, but not nearly enough to meet current needs.

To build stronger communities and keep our nation’s commitment to the future success of all children, regardless of circumstances at birth, Congress must agree to fund Head Start at no less than the Senate Labor/HHS funding level.

PLEASE take one minute to click on the link below to email your Members of Congress and urge them: Fund Head Start at or above the level in the Senate Labor/HHS bill. And please encourage your friends to do the same.
