Back in February, the AHA joined interfaith communities and religious freedom advocates in opposing an inappropriate promotion of Christianity in Oklahoma’s revised social studies standards. These standards were unfortunately approved; now, the Oklahoma Legislature has an opportunity to reject them by supporting HJR 1030 and SJR 19.
Stemming in part from the warped mind and leadership of State Superintendent and Christian Nationalist Ryan Walters, the standards infuse Christian beliefs into your child’s public school curriculum, and would require that your kids be taught about the Bible and its connection to American patriotism and exceptionalism.
A clear example of religious privilege and favoritism of the dominant religion, these standards erode the separation of church and state, stamp out the ability of our kids to learn accurate and unbiased information, and rip away their right to receive a quality education. This stuff is dangerous, and has long lasting effects. We need to do what we can to stop their implementation.
The proposed changes are now in the hands of the Oklahoma Legislature - and we have an opportunity to get this preposterous proposal struck down, but it needs to happen before May 1.
As constituents of Oklahoma state elected officials, we need you to join us in opposing these standards, too - urge them to vehemently oppose the implementation of this nonsense. It only takes two seconds - help us sound the alarm on religious favoritism and Christian Nationalism in your children’s education. Tell the Oklahoma Legislature to act now to strongly oppose these standards.
