The Johnson Amendment is a provision in federal law that protects the integrity and independence of tax-exempt organizations, including charitable nonprofits, houses of worship, and foundations by ensuring they do not endorse or oppose candidates for public office. 

It’s a basic trade-off for organizations that enjoy non-profit status: no shilling for candidates or putting your thumb on the scales of our elections.

Unfortunately, Christian Nationalists in Congress have introduced the so-called ‘Free Speech Fairness Act,’ which would gut the Johnson Amendment by allowing houses of worship and other 501c3s to make political statements in their work and maintain their status, transforming charitable organizations into tax-exempt partisan campaign organizations. They want to turn churches into electioneering centers. 

Secular and faith groups condemn the religious far right’s push to scrap the Johnson amendment, because they agree: Americans deserve fair elections and an uncorrupted government that works for all of us. The Johnson Amendment is an integral part of that.
