The Comstock Act, passed in the 1800s, contains a series of antiquated federal laws that prohibits the mailing of ‘obscene,’ ‘lewd’ and ‘indecent’ materials. Abortion medication and procedure materials, contraception, sex toys and even love letters were prohibited.
Even though courts have ruled that provisions of the Act are unenforceable, they still remain in statute.
Christian Nationalists at the federal level plan to try and use the Comstock Act to enact a ‘backdoor’ national abortion ban. Without a single action taken in Congress, access to abortions and contraception - as well as LGBTQIA+ content broadly - could be outlawed.
The Stop Comstock Act would heed this warning and directly address and repeal the vulnerabilities in federal law from being used as tools of oppression.
Your representatives in Congress should be doing everything they can to preempt attacks on our rights. Tell them to support the Stop Comstock Act.
