Fire fighters and EMS personnel work in dangerous conditions while fighting fires, responding to vehicle accidents, and caring for critically ill and injured patients. Unlike private-sector and federal employees, local and state fire fighters have no federally protected right to work collectively with their employers to improve working conditions and operational readiness. Studies show that when fire fighters and EMS personnel collaborate with their employers, they enjoy safer working conditions, higher wages, and more secure retirements. Communities that protect the right to collective bargaining also typically have lower death rates per fire. As fire and EMS personnel increasingly respond across state lines for wildfires, terrorist acts, and natural disasters, it is more important than ever to ensure they have the staffing, resources, and open dialogue needed to succeed. The IAFF urges Congress to pass the Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act and ensure fire fighters have a seat at the table with their employers.
