The Illinois PTA recognizes that gun control is only part of the issue of violence: we need to address the root cause by strengthening and expanding the school and community supports for mental health service before violence erupts in our classrooms and communities! The Illinois PTA legislative platform supports adequate legislative measures and the related and necessary financial support of programs and services to improve the health of children and youth, including the extension of clinical facilities and services staffed with qualified personnel.
In connection with our advocacy mission for Illinois children and youth, the Illinois PTA has taken positions on related legislation, including the support of the following:
HB 4337: Criminal Code - Trigger Modification
HB 5728: Criminal Code - Rate of Fire Enhancement
HB 4658: School Code - Mental Health Awareness
HB 4918: Amends the Developmental Disability and Mental Disability Services Act - Family Resource Centers
HB 4950: Early Mental Health Act
HB 5770: School Code - Mental Health Services
SB 2951: Early Mental Health Act
