Tell Congress: End US Sweatshops, Create Jobs With Dignity
America’s nearly 100,000 garment workers often face wage theft and our apparel manufacturers face unfair competition. Fashion is a $3 trillion global industry, but its manufacturing supply chains around the world are often rife with abuses, including forced labor and extreme poverty pay. While many American garment workers earn a middle class living, as a group they still suffer the second-highest rate of wage theft of all workers, with some earning as little as $2.68 an hour, far below the federal minimum wage.

The FABRIC Act, introduced in the Senate by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), would protect nearly 100,000 American garment workers and revitalize the garment industry in the United States by investing in domestic apparel production, improving working conditions, and reforming the piece-rate pay scale. The bill enforces minimum wage standards, ends wage theft, combats factory violations with workplace protections, increases transparency of brand practices, and revitalizes domestic manufacturing with a multi-million dollar grant program.

As Catholics, we are called to uphold the dignity of workers—ensuring all who work receive a just salary and holding brands accountable when they steal wages or otherwise exploit workers. Join us in asking Congress to pass the FABRIC act to benefit nearly 100,000 U.S. garment workers and level the playing field for responsible businesses, ensure that garment workers are paid fair wages, and promote much-needed job growth.
