Help Stop Chiropractor' Scope of Practice Expansion
The battle to protect patients continues! Unfortunately SB 56 by Senator Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb (D-Baton Rouge) has passed the Senate floor and could go on to the House Health and Welfare committee as early as next Wednesday, May 27. We need your help to stop this dangerous legislation that would undermine patient safety!
SB 56 significantly expands chiropractors' scope of practice beyond their training and education. This legislation would allow chiropractors to examine, evaluation, and diagnose patients of all ages for any conditions, injuries, or disorders that interfere with "normal biomechanical function."
SB 56 also expands chiropractors' authority to counsel patients on nutrition and wellness. This provision allows chiropractors to treat patients with life threatening chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
Next Wednesday is our best chance to defeat this legislation once and for all. Please take a moment to call the members of the House Health and Welfare Committee and ask them to protect patient safety and vote NO on SB 56.

Due Process Rights Legislation Going to House Floor
Thank you to all of our members who responded to last week's call to action asking the members of the House Health and Welfare Committee to support HB 573 by Rep. Chris Hazel. The LSMS is very proud to report that the substitute bill was reported out of committee with unanimous support! Due to legislative procedures the former HB 573 is now HB 843, however the purpose and intent of the bill is the same and continues to ensure due process rights will be put in place for physicians.
We need your help to keep this critical piece of legislation moving forward! HB 843 is scheduled to be heard on the floor of the House next Tuesday, May 26th. Please click here to ask your elected representative to vote YES on HB 843.
Please help us bring transparency and accountability to the physician complaint process!
For more information about HB 843 please click here.
Take Action!

The LSMS seeks physicians who are interested in volunteering to serve on the Physicians' Health Foundation of Louisiana (PHFL) Board. It is the primary role of the PHFL to offer assistance to health care professionals who may be suffering from difficulties such as substance use issues, depression, anxiety, etc., in addition to a host of physical ailments and disruptive behavioral patterns. The PHFL supports health care professionals who are in their program and advocates for them with hospitals, health plan networks, malpractice insurance carriers, licensure boards, etc. If you are interested in serving on this board, please contact Geraldine Leche at 225.763.2320 or geraldine@lsms.org.

Did you know that one of the benefits of being a new LAMMICO policyholder is that the first year of your membership to the LSMS is free? Since the program's inception in 2012, a total of 184 first-year physicians have taken advantage of this benefit, which pays membership dues to join the state medical society and local parish/component medical society for one year.
Are you a new-to-practice physician? Taking advantage of the LAMMICO - LSMS Association Member Benefit Program is easy. Just contact LSMS Membership Manager Terri Watson at 800.375.9508 to apply. |

Focus On

This week, Dr. Robert Maupin of New Orleans, discusses how physicians can uplift and advance the well being of the mothers in our communities. US women face an estimated 1 in 1,800 risk of maternal death, the worst performance among any developed country. Recent US public health surveillance also has identified maternal deaths to represent a significant area of health disparity. Read his best advice for clinicians in our third article covering women's health this month by clicking here.
