Senate passes VETS Act, would enable VA providers to offer telehealth across state lines
The bill gives legislative teeth to the agency's Anywhere to Anywhere telemedicine program, including a clause that bars states from revoking providers who practice telehealth across state lines.
The U.S. Senate passed the Veterans in E-Health and Telemedicine Support Act of 2017on Wednesday evening, bipartisan legislation designed to expand the Department of Veterans Affairs' telehealth programs and allow VA providers to cross state lines to practice telemedicine.
The legislation is crucial to the VA's Anywhere to Anywhere telehealth program introduced by Secretary David Shulkin, MD, and President Donald Trump in August. The bill provides legislative authority to Shulkin's administrative actions.
In early November, the House of Representatives unanimously passed S. 925, which received a significant amount of support from trade groups, providers and legislators when it was introduced in the fall. READ MORE |

A year into a private company's takeover of Baton Rouge's prison medical unit, here's what's changed
A year after the city-parish privatized health care at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, a private company has the operation fully staffed and outfitted with new medical equipment that past nurses repeatedly and unsuccessfully requested from City Hall.
CorrectHealth officials said they have spent the past year changing the way inmates go through health screenings when they enter the prison, converting paper files into electronic medical records, increasing the number of nurses staffing the prison and more. The Atlanta-based company will receive nearly $5.7 million from the city-parish to pay for its continued services in 2018.
Prison health care costs have been escalating for years while the amount of medical attention inmates need has also been on the rise. East Baton Rouge Prison Warden Dennis Grimes said the population of sick inmates is the highest it has ever been, and the high rates of people coming to prison as they detox from heroin or need treatment for HIV put even more strain on the prison's health care providers. The cancer death rate has dropped again. Here's why.
The nation's overall cancer death rate declined 1.7 percent in 2015, the latest indication of steady, long-term progress against the disease, according to a new report by the American Cancer Society. Over nearly a quarter-century, the mortality rate has fallen 26 percent, resulting in almost 2.4 million fewer deaths than if peak rates had continued.
But the report, released Thursday, shows that Americans' No. 2 killer remains a formidable, sometimes implacable, foe. An estimated 609,000 people are expected to die of the ailment this year, while 1.74 million will be diagnosed with it.
Cancer Statistics 2018, the organization's annual look at incidence, mortality and survival, tracks the decades-long decline in mortality as driven largely by falling death rates among four malignancies - lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. Ahmedin Jemal, the group's vice president for surveillance and health services research, said the decreases largely reflect reduced smoking and advances in prevention, early detection and treatment.
