The LSMS is thrilled to celebrate 143 years! Thank you to our members for the support and for their dedication to the practice of medicine.

In 1878, a time that saw a renaissance in Louisiana with the birth of a new state constitution, 80 physicians representing 15 parishes gathered in New Orleans on January 14-16 and formed the Louisiana State Medical Association. The name would later be changed to the Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS). Since its inception in 1878, the LSMS has worked for a singular purpose: to advance healthcare in the state of Louisiana.

Louisiana Sees Another Drop in Health Insurance through Marketplace

Louisiana saw its fifth annual drop in health insurance enrollment through the individual marketplace set up through President Barack Obama's federal health overhaul law.

The Advocate reports that enrollment in the Affordable Care Act's individual market fell to 83,159 this year, down from 87,748 policyholders last year. The program offers income-based, taxpayer-subsidized private health insurance plans for people who aren't covered on the job.

At its peak enrollment in 2016, there were 214,148 policyholders in Louisiana. But it's fallen each year since then.

Azar, Trump Administration Will No Longer Hold Back 2nd Shots, Recommend 65 and Older Get COVID Vaccine

The Trump administration will start releasing more doses of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to states immediately instead of holding back the second dose, as Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said states should expand vaccinations to everyone age 65 and older, in an effort to get the vaccine to more people immediately.

Can Healthcare Employers Require Employees to Receive the COVID-19 Vaccine?

With COVID-19 vaccines finally receiving government approval and beginning to be distributed across the country, many healthcare employers are wondering whether they can require their employees to receive the vaccine to protect the health and safety of other employees and patients who are on the premises.  Additionally, healthcare employers may wonder whether they can bar an employee from the premises or even terminate an employee if the person has a legitimate reason for not taking the COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19: What Do We Know About the New Coronavirus Variant?

Recently, global media has been abuzz with news and speculation about a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.

The variant, which researchers first identified in the U.K., is called B.1.1.7, though as scientists began to express concern about it, initial U.K. government documents dubbed it VUI - 202012/01, standing for "the first variant under investigation in December 2020."

Later government documents from December designated it as a "variant of concern," and referred to it as VOC 202012/01.
