Louisiana Board of Pharmacy Regulation Revision Committee

On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, LSMS District 7 Councilor, Brian Gamborg, MD, along with Vice President of Legal Affairs, Lauren Bailey, participated in the Regulation Revision Committee of the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. During this meeting Dr. Gamborg reiterated that the LSMS would appreciate the Committee considering adoption of a rule which would clearly identify prescriptions which are computer generated. The LSMS has also requested that the Committee adopt a rule which would require pharmacists to transfer prescriptions which have yet to be filled or have refills remaining upon request of the patient, rather than requiring the physician to issue an additional prescription. Dr. Gamborg's testimony was well received and the Committee has agreed to continue to collaborate with the LSMS in order to resolve the issues relative to automatic prescription refills, ownership, and transfer of electronic prescriptions.  We would like to thank Dr. Gamborg for his invaluable assistance in this process.

Biden Kills Trump Administration Plan on Opioid-Treatment Prescriptions Hailed by Physicians

The Biden administration said Wednesday that it is canceling a last-minute plan by the Trump administration to let more physicians prescribe an opioid-treatment drug, despite exhortations from lawmakers and physician groups to keep it.

"On January 14, 2021, HHS announced forthcoming Practice Guidelines for the Administration of Buprenorphine for Treating Opioid Use Disorder," the White House's drug policy office said in a message obtained by The Washington Post. "Unfortunately, the announcement was made prematurely. Therefore, the Guidelines previously announced cannot be issued at this time."

Many Last-Minute Health Rules Subject to Biden 60-Day Pause

From insulin to life-saving medical devices to last-ditch efforts to protect premature infants, multiple rules posted by the Health and Human Services Department in the final days of Donald Trump's presidency are subject to a 60-day pause.

The halt on Trump-era rulemaking includes two controversial rules designed to curb high drug prices-one that changes the way pharmacy liaisons and drugmakers can pay each other and another that ties Medicare rates for expensive drugs to the prices paid in other countries.
