Advocacy 101: Intro to Advocacy
April 3, 2024 by Action Network

Sharing your stories and experiences as someone impacted by lung cancer can help create positive change. Whether you are a patient, survivor, caregiver, healthcare provider, family member, or friend, adding your voice as a lung cancer advocate can help humanize important issues and statistics for policymakers and decision-makers.

In this introductory Advocacy 101 webinar, LUNGevity’s Brandon Leonard and Lauren Humphries discuss different types of advocacy and meaningful opportunities to engage with policymakers, regulators, media, researchers, and your/your loved one’s healthcare team. Jill Feldman, a lung cancer patient and experienced advocate, joins the conversation to share her firsthand experiences, insight, and helpful advice for other lung cancer advocates. (Read more below the video.)

When Jill was 13 years old, she lost her dad and two grandparents to lung cancer, and then her mom and close aunt died of lung cancer when she was in her 20s. She became a volunteer, an advocate, and past president of LUNGevity Foundation before the unthinkable happened. In 2009, at 39 years old with four small children, Jill herself was diagnosed with EGFR-positive lung cancer.

Jill continues to be involved with LUNGevity and participates in countless advocacy opportunities with national and international cancer organizations. In 2017, Jill co-founded the EGFR Resisters, a grassroots, patient-driven community dedicated exclusively to changing EGFR-positive lung cancer into a manageable, chronic disease. Jill has shared her story with various local and national media, including "The Today Show."

This is the first of a three-part webinar series:

  • Advocacy 101
  • Research Advocacy 101 – Spring 2024 (date TBA)
  • Self / Patient Advocacy 101 – Summer 2024 (date TBA)
