Protect SNAP and Food Security for People with Disabilities

Millions of Americans, including many people with disabilities and their families, rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to afford groceries and meet their basic nutritional needs. For many households, SNAP helps bridge the gap between rising food costs and limited incomes, ensuring that children, adults, seniors, and people with disabilities do not go hungry.

Congress is currently considering proposals that would make deep cuts to SNAP and shift significant program costs to states. These changes could force states to reduce benefits, limit access to the program, or cut other critical services. The result would be increased food insecurity for millions of people who already face financial and daily living challenges.

People with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to these cuts. Many face higher living expenses due to medical care, transportation, assistive technology, and caregiving needs. At the same time, barriers to employment and lower average incomes make access to nutrition assistance essential for maintaining health and independence.

SNAP is one of the nation's most effective anti-hunger programs. It helps families put food on the table, supports local economies, and improves health outcomes. Cutting SNAP would not reduce the need for food assistance—it would simply make it harder for people to access the support they need. No one should have to choose between buying groceries, paying rent, or covering medical expenses. Congress must protect SNAP and ensure that people with disabilities and their families can continue to access this critical support.

Here's what we're asking:

  • Oppose any cuts to SNAP benefits that would reduce food assistance for individuals and families.
  • Reject proposals that shift SNAP costs to states and threaten access to the program.
  • Protect people with disabilities, older adults, caregivers, and low-income families from policies that create additional barriers to receiving nutrition assistance.
  • Strengthen federal investments in SNAP and other nutrition programs that help prevent hunger and promote health in communities across the country.
