Weekly Advocacy Report

Earlier this week, Governor Hogan signed into law more than 200 bills that had cleared the Maryland General Assembly during the session that was completed last month.

In previous years, the governor has held up to three separate bill signings. Unfortunately, they are rarely announced more than a few days in advance, so it’s unclear if and/or when our Oral Health Task Force bill will come up.

Please take just a few minutes to ask Governor Hogan to sign into law HB 368/SB 100 the Oral Health Task Force in Maryland sponsored by Senator Delores Kelley and Delegate Heather Bagnall. You can use this link to send him a note: https://governor.maryland.gov/contact-the-governor/.

Brevity is a bonus! Thank the governor and then simply let him know the importance of this bill to Marylanders and ensuring they have access to oral health care and ask that he sign it.

I also would like to take this opportunity invite you to receive free CE credits and support our own Dr. George Shepley’s campaign for ADA President-Elect. Dr. Doug Barnes will provide an update on ceramic restorations; Dr. John Comisi will talk about the signs and symptoms for Sleep-Related Breathing; and Dr. Barbara Steinberg will discuss the health considerations that go along with eating disorders.

The event for Dr. Shepley will be held online on Friday, June 18, from 8 a.m. – noon. So, you don’t even have to leave your office or home to participate.

You can register for the event here.  The cost is free, we only ask that you make a voluntary contribution to Dr. Shepley’s campaign.  And, thanks to a generous anonymous gift, a voluntary donation is waived for all dental students and dental school graduates in the classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Please support Dr. Shepley in this endeavor. It is a real source of pride for MSDA and all Maryland dentists to have him running for this important position in our profession.

We look forward to seeing you on Zoom on June 18.

As always, stay safe and get those emails to Governor Hogan!

Sincerely,

Charlie Doring, DDS MAGD
Chair, Legislative Affairs Committee

p.s. If you or your staff aren’t vaccinated, be sure to get it done in the next couple days so you are eligible to win the Maryland Lotto prizes! Check out this story in the Baltimore Sun.
