The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, established in 1980 with bipartisan support, provides a vital lifeline for refugees fleeing persecution and violence. For decades, it has offered millions the opportunity to rebuild their lives in safety and freedom.
While wars raged across five continents, the United States resettled slightly more than 100,000 refugees in fiscal year 2024, 40,000 more than in 2023. This life-saving program offered permanent protection to persecuted Christians and others who were forced to flee their country with no possibility of safe return.
Yet recent executive orders have frozen funding and suspended the refugee resettlement program, immediately canceling flights for thousands of refugees who were already approved for resettlement and potentially stranding those who have been resettled recently without the safety net that they were promised.
For years, World Relief, the relief and development arm of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), and partners have obeyed the biblical call to care for the vulnerable -- including many persecuted Christians -- working with the federal government and local churches to resettle refugees. This work has saved lives and strengthened our nation.
We can insist that our nation sustain a robust refugee resettlement program to ensure persecuted believers and others can live and worship freely. Urge President Trump and your members of Congress to immediately restart the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program to continue restoring futures for those who long to share the freedoms we enjoy.
