Support the Social Security Fairness Act, H.R. 82 Mark-up by the House Ways and Means Committee

Your unwavering dedication to advocating for the rights and benefits of federal employees and retirees has brought the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023, H.R. 82, closer to achieving legislative progress in repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO)−two longstanding provisions that unfairly reduce the retirement benefits of hardworking public servants.

In the 117th Congress, H.R. 82 achieved an incredible milestone with 305 cosponsors. Now, in the 118th Congress, H.R. 82 is ahead of that pace, already surpassing the cosponsors needed to trigger the House Consensus Calendar rule.

This rule allows the bill’s sponsor to force either committee action or a floor vote. Per the rule, if a bill maintains 290 or more cosponsors for 25 legislative days, and has not been advanced by the committee of jurisdiction, it must proceed to a floor vote. With 300 cosponsors and counting, H.R. 82 is now in prime position for a pivotal step towards committee action.

Urge your representative to push the House Ways and Means Committee to advance H.R. 82, with a favorable recommendation, to the floor. This is an essential next step towards rectifying these inequitable provisions.

Your advocacy has been instrumental in getting us to this point.

If your Representative has not cosponsored H.R. 82, the system will prompt you to send a message urging them to cosponsor H.R. 82 and push for a House Ways and Means Committee “mark-up” (a meeting to advance the bill) of H.R. 82.
