Many federal employees began their tenure with the federal government as temporary employees before transitioning to a permanent role. Currently, temporary work is ineligible for credit toward the FERS plan which can prolong a federal employee’s retirement timeline. This prolonged timeline can cause federal employees to delay their retirement out of necessity instead of staying on by choice or retiring at the normal retirement age. Just because a federal employee had temporary status does not mean their work was any less meaningful.
The Federal Retirement Fairness Act would make it so federal employees could count their time working as temporary employees towards their FERS retirement plan by paying a deposit for employee contributions covering their temporary service.
