Use the sample letter below to send a message to your lawmakers urging them to cosponsor the Federal Employee Records Relief Act, H.R. 10718. Introduced by Congressman James R. Walkinshaw (VA-11), this legislation would help former federal employees obtain missing personnel records, correct administrative errors and receive clear information about the benefits they earned during their federal service.
Missing or inaccurate personnel records can create significant problems for former federal employees, including delays in retirement processing, difficulties maintaining health coverage, challenges securing loans or future employment, and uncertainty about earned benefits. The bill would require the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), working with former employing agencies, to provide personnel records, correct administrative errors and provide written benefits information and coordination assistance, including information about health coverage continuation options.
Federal employees who separated from service for any reason on or after January 20, 2025, including retirees, would have four years after enactment to submit requests for assistance.
