In Massachusetts it is incredibly difficult for people experiencing homelessness to obtain a state ID, which is necessary for a variety of daily tasks such as applying for housing or employment, getting a library card, and more. Something as simple as not having an ID card should not lock individuals out of the resources they need. This is a social justice issue, and that’s why NASW-MA is advocating for an (HD. 1085/SD.1712) Act to provide identification to youth and adults experiencing homelessness. This legislation would establish a fee waiver for anyone experiencing homelessness seeking a standard Massachusetts ID. It would also create a process for those experiencing homelessness who cannot meet existing criteria to submit residency documentation from providers of homelessness and/or youth services.
