Social Work Is and Must Continue to be a Professional Degree!
The Department of Education is looking to limit the degrees that are considered professional for student loan limits, including social work. This means that “non-professional” degrees will have lower student loan limits. This new definition of a “professional degree” excludes masters and doctoral programs in many professions, including social work. 

The Impact: Graduate Students who are not enrolled in “professional degree” programs can only borrow up to $20,500 annually. These changes make an MSW or DSW unattainable through federal loans, forcing students to take out loans with predatory private companies or not complete the degree at all.

NASW NY affirms the status of social work as a professional degree and will work to reverse this action in any efforts possible.
