Support A.9566-A (Berger) / S.9123 (Sutton): Extend Limited Permits for Social Workers
New York's social workers are facing a serious workforce crisis, and current law is making it worse. Under existing statute, limited permits for LMSWs and LCSWs are valid for only 12 months and cannot be renewed. For many social workers, that is simply not enough time to prepare for and pass the licensing exam, especially given ongoing exam backlogs and the demands of working in under-resourced settings. A.9566-A (Berger) / S.9123 (Sutton) would extend the limited permit period to 24 months and allow for up to two additional one-year renewals, giving social workers the time they need to become fully licensed without losing their jobs or disrupting services to clients. Urge your state legislators to pass this bill and keep qualified social workers on the job.
