KEEP UP THE PRESSURE TO DEFEAT THE ADA EDUCATION AND REFORM ACT (HR 620)

NDSC has been actively engaged in the efforts to defeat HR 620, the ADA Education and Reform Act. This bill would significantly weaken the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by removing the incentive for businesses to provide reasonable accommodations for accessibility while placing onerous procedural burdens on people with disabilities who attempt to enforce their rights under the ADA. (See article from Former Governor Tom Ridge (R-PA), which explains our concerns with the bill: http://thehill.com/opinion/civil-rights/373546-rolling-back-the-civil-rights-of-the-disabled-harms-us-all). We are hearing that the outcry of the disability community is making a real difference! Keep up the pressure! #NoHR620 #HandsOffMyADA

HR 620 was passed by the Rules Committee yesterday and will come to the House floor for a vote on Thursday February 15. Calls, emails and Tweets to Members are needed all day today and tomorrow before the vote.  The message is to VOTE NO on HR 620 and all amendments except for the amendment offered by Rep. Langevin, which entirely removes the notice and cure provisions from the bill.

Prior to the vote, there will be one hour of debate on the bill. There were 7 amendments offered, which will be debatable for 10 minutes each. None of the amendments make positive substantive changes to the bill EXCEPT for the one offered by Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI), which removes the "notice and cure" provision that would require the person who claims discrimination to provide written notice that allows 60 days for an owner to acknowledge receipt of the complaint and 120 days to demonstrate substantial progress in removing the barrier before legal action may be pursued.

Please target the following Representatives who have not yet taken a position or are leaning towards NO, especially the CA, FL, MN and OR Members.
