Presidents Message: Dr. Parag Mehta Addressing Transgender, Mental Health & Heroes Circle Moment
Conversations among the leadership: I had the pleasure of meeting several of our district presidents virtually on June 21, 2021. We have energetic, enthusiastic, articulate and leaders with a clear vision of addressing the needs of our patients and physicians. Together, we aim to further discuss the following topics in the coming weeks: - The mental health of physicians and patients: Healers are hurt, stressed, and need help. Physician burnout is at its peak. We should help each other and our patients.
- Standing in Solidary with Our Transgender Patients and Peers: The lives of transgender individuals are complex and influenced by many factors. There is a dire need for radical change within medical education programs and practices. We must address the issue of transgender health disparities through improving medical training and awareness.
- Advocating for Equity and Equality: EQUALITY aims to ensure that everyone gets the same things to enjoy full, healthy lives. On the other hand, EQUITY involves trying to understand and give people what they need, to enjoy healthy lives.
- Supporting Student Interest Groups: Students are the future of medicine and the health of humanity, and we give the highest importance to the student section.
- Increasing Membership: Together, we are stronger. ACP promotes quality patient care, advocacy, education, and career fulfillment in internal medicine and its subspecialities.
Once again, thank you to the leaders who participated in these conversations: Chapter Governors: Leslie Algase, MD, FACP, Dan Pomerantz MD, FACP, Susan Lee, MD, FACP, Governor-Elect, Todd Simon, MD, FACP and District Presidents: Kimberly Krantz, MD, FACP , Nandini Anandu, MD, FACP, Lana Vardanian, MD, FACP, David Bernstein, MD, FACP, Nidhish Tiwari, MD, FACP, David Heisig, MD, FACP, Mohammad Samih, MD, FACP, Caroline Gomez-Dicesare, MD, FACP, Miriam Smith, MD, FACP, Tiffany Pulcino, MD, FACP, Sofya Kostanyan, MD, FACP (NYACP has 16 district Presidents and Five Governors and two Governor-elects). We have started working on addressing these topic areas, and very shortly, you will have excellent programs coming your way.
If you have suggestions or ideas, please reach out to me at DrParagMehta@gmail.com, or my cell is 516-526-3631.

Member Update: NY’s Support of ACP’s Washington DC Leadership Day Held on May 25 – 26, 2021 Leadership Day is the College’s annual two-day advocacy event that enables members from across the country to bring our issues of concern to U.S. lawmakers. This is a great opportunity for the College and members to bring our policy priorities to Congress and try to influence the legislative process on behalf of internal medicine. This year's advocacy program was held virtually on May 25th and 26th. This year, delegates from NY met with US House of Representatives Members Lee Zeldin, Chris Jacobs, Brian Higgins, Antonio Delgato, Thomas Suozzi, and Jamaal Bowman, and Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer. ACP leaders urged members of Congress and their staffs to support the following priorities: - Expand health coverage and affordability: Congress should pass legislation to expand access to health coverage and make it more affordable by supporting policies that would continue expanded eligibility for higher premium tax credits to purchase coverage through the Affordable Care Act and provide higher federal payments for states to expand their Medicaid population.
- Train and support frontline physicians during and after COVID-19: Congress should pass legislation to ensure an adequate supply of internal medicine specialists trained in primary and comprehensive care that includes increasing Graduate Medical Education positions, addressing medical education debt, decreasing barriers to increase the number of international physicians in the United States, funding Title VII Health Professions grants and addressing the behavioral health and well-being of physicians.
- Support the value of primary and comprehensive care: Congress should pass legislation to ensure patients continue to have access to vital primary care services by stabilizing and improving payments for undervalued office-based visits under both Medicare and Medicaid, providing sufficient funding to prevent scheduled and future cuts in payments and maintaining incentives for physicians to transform their practices into Advanced Alternative Payment Models under the Medicare Quality Payment Program.
- Improve access to prescription drugs and reduce costs: Congress should pass legislation to improve access to prescription drugs by reducing excessive prescription drug costs through pricing transparency, providing authority to the federal government to negotiate prescription drug prices under the Medicare Part D program, eliminating federal tax deductions for direct-to-consumer advertising and removing harmful step therapy protocols.

NY Chapter Member Satisfaction Rating Look for a summary and follow-up of qualitative feedback in a future newsletter! |
In December, we asked: “Would you recommend membership in NYACP to a colleague?” Your responses were calculated into an industry-standard rating called the Net Promoter Score (NPS) that is used for gauging members' overall satisfaction. The closer to 100, the more members are satisfied and likely to actively promote membership to others. Anything over 70 is the gold standard. 50 and above is excellent. Your feedback from 2019 impacted Chapter activity in 2020 and that is reflected in the Chapter’s NPS rating. Thank you for helping NYACP improve from a NPS of 23 to 51 in one year! Member Engagement is our goal and member support is critical. Members also shared qualitative feedback that helps the Chapter understand your needs and continually make improvements to your experience with NYACP. Look for a summary of what we learned in an upcoming newsletter!
