President's Message: Dr. Jitendra Barmecha Progress Note: It is a great pleasure and honor to announce that Donna Morrison, MD, FACP has been elected by members of the New York Hudson Valley Region to serve as Governor-elect Designee. Dr. Morrison will start her term as Governor-elect after ACP’s Annual Business Meeting on April 29, 2023. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Morrison and thanking Anush Patel, MD, FACP for his candidacy. The tripledemic (Seasonal Flu, RSV, and COVID) is here and, according to CDC, the seasonal flu is earlier and remains at a higher-than-normal activity level this year. Based on the predictive models and anticipated increase in Flu and Covid infections, ACP has signed onto a joint statement with 11 other health care professional organizations to remind the public of the importance of vaccinations and early treatment, given the anticipated increase in COVID-19 and influenza cases this fall and winter. Nation’s Health Care Organizations Urge COVID-19 and Influenza Vaccination and Treatment According to a recently published study by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), it is projected that physician demand will grow faster than supply, leading to a projected physician shortage of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians by 2034. The shortage of primary care physicians is predicted to be between 17,800 and 48,000, and the shortage across the non-primary care specialties is between 21,000 and 77,100 physicians. The study concludes that the rapid growth of APRNs and Pas, and the recent GME funding & accreditation changes, may offset some of the physician shortage demands. (The Complexities of Physician Supply and Demand: Projections From 2019 to 2034) On the other hand, according to a recent ACP study on the number of U.S. internal medicine physicians and ACP members, (excluding residents/fellows, students, and affiliates), there has been a slight increase in IM physicians with stagnant ACP membership: • 294,764 U.S. internal medicine physicians and 76,398 ACP members, as of June 2022 • 293,677 U.S. internal medicine physicians and 77,070 ACP members, as of June 2021 • 276,643 U.S. internal medicine physicians and 76,900 ACP members, as of June 2018 The study provides insight into how ACP and the chapters can grow its membership. On a separate note, and after careful consideration, ACP has decided to sunset their Leadership Academy and Certificate in Physician Leadership program, which ran in partnership with the American Association for Physician Leadership. ACP, and especially the New York Chapter, continue to focus their attention and commitment toward program development and leadership training to meet the needs of members. Information on new programming opportunities will be forthcoming in the near future. Finally, Thanksgiving is a special season since it gives us another chance to spread joy, reminisce on wonderful memories, contemplate the lessons we have learned and appreciate the people in our lives. I wish you all an incredible Thanksgiving Day! Jitendra Barmecha, MD, MPH, FACP, SFHM President
