As many New Yorkers already know, the New York State Senate passed assisted suicide legislation, 35-27, on June 9, 2025. The Assembly previously passed this dangerous bill on April 29, 2025.
While the legislative passage of the bill is grievous news, it does not mean that the assisted suicide fight is over. It simply means that the fight has moved from the third floor of the New York State Capitol (where the legislative chambers are located) to the second floor (where the Governor’s office is located).
Gov. Kathy Hochul can still stop state-sanctioned suicide in New York. At some point between now and the end of this year, the assisted suicide bill will be forwarded to Gov. Hochul, and the Governor will either sign it or veto it. Gov. Hochul has consistently declined to take a public position on assisted suicide, so we do not know where she stands.
A multifaceted effort to influence Gov. Hochul’s decision on assisted suicide is already underway. You can do your part to help by e-mailing and calling Gov. Hochul’s office to urge her to veto state-sanctioned suicide. If we can flood the Governor's office with messages against assisted suicide, we will make it more likely that the Governor does the right thing by declining to turn doctors into executioners in New York.
Please don’t wait! Contact Gov. Hochul today.
