New York State PTA

Support students with dyslexia and dysgraphia

A.2687/S.5569 has passed both houses, and has been sent to Governor Hochul for signature. This legislation establishes a center for dyslexia and dysgraphia within our State Education Department.

NYS PTA supports this legislation, and urges Governor Hochul to sign this important legislation.

The Center for Dyslexia and Dysgraphia will be charged with:

  • establishing definitions of dyslexia and dysgraphia
  • collecting and analyzing appropriate data
  • developing and disseminating informational tools
  • setting standards for screening of students in grades K-5, for interventions, and for training
  • issuing reports, and
  • creating guidebooks and informational materials

We know that 1 in 5 children may be a child with dyslexia or dysgraphia.  We must support their learning and early screening with appropriate and meaningful interventions. NYS PTA just passed a critical Resolution supporting students with dyslexia unanimously, and also calls for the full adoption of the recommendations of the State's Dyslexia and Dysgraphia Taskforce.

We look to Governor Hochul to SUPPORT, and urge its enactment.
