Filed by Senator Joan Lovely and Representative Sally Kerans, this legislation would require prenatal education and newborn screening for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV), which affects 1 in 200 babies.
cCMV is the most common infectious cause of birth defects and the leading non-genetic cause of childhood hearing loss. In Massachusetts, about 400 babies are born with cCMV each year, but most are never tested because they appear healthy at birth. Despite its prevalence, less than 10% of women have ever heard about the virus or how to lower their risk of infection during pregnancy.
Take action today: Contact your Senator today, to help ensure babies with cCMV are identified early and receive the care they need!
